Successful completion of the White Card course is a mandatory pre-requisite in Australia in order to do construction work on a construction site.
The White Card course is part of a broader legislative change that occured in 1 January 2012 to implement a more harmonised and consistent approach to construction safety induction training across all of Australia. his law is known as the Work Health and Safety Act. This law requires a White Card. Additionally, Worksafe Australia declared the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work and all States and Territories in Australia have agreed to implement this Code.
Presently, West Australia and Victoria operate under older laws but still recognize interstate White Cards under those laws.
This will mean that the construction industry in Australia has a nationally consistent approach to induction training, and will also mean that there is national recognition of the qualification from State to State across Australia.

Here is an excerpt from one of our most popular FAQ articles: "Can I get the White Card online in my State?"
New national Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation in Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Northern Territory and Commonwealth jurisdictions came into affect on January the 1st 2012. his new law, known as the Work, Health and Safety Act, 2011 rovides the basis for recognition of White Cards across all Australian states. /p>
Each State makes their own transition arrangements under the new legislation and accordingly moves from previous construction induction requirements, such as Blue Cards (QLD), Red Cards (Vic) and Green Cards (NSW) to now issuing only White Cards. /p>
States that have not yet adopted the new legislation, continue to recognise insterstate White Cards, although at present each State based authority may have differeing perspectives on the transition arrangements. /p>
Note that the Code requires three types of construction site induction training: strong>General Induction (White Card), site-specific induction, and task-specific induction.
Many people are concerned particularly about whether they can get a White Card online if they live in NSW, due to a perception that Workcover NSW do not permit online White Cards. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation propagated out there about this topic. Here are the facts:
No NSW trainer is allowed by NSW WorkCover to provide whitecard training online.
However, the equivalent agencies to NSW WorkCover in most other states do authorise online training for Whitecards and issues valid Whitecards based on that training. Since 1 January 2012, NSW WorkCover has advised (we have the physical letter on file) that interstate Whitecards – obtained through online or face to face training, re to be accepted under the new NSW Work Health and Safety Act 2011. On Tuesday 19th June 2012 we received a broadcast email from WorkCover NSW clarifying the matter further:
As a result of interstate General Induction Training (GIT) cards being specifically recognised under the Regulation rather than via the previous mutual recognition arrangements, state of residency restrictions no longer apply. This means that when assessing Evidence of Identity (EOI) for GIT applicants, there is no requirement for the applicant to be able to prove they are a NSW resident.
The card we issue you will be either a Queensland or a Western Australian issued White Card, as we are a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) registered in both these States." (Article posted by Steven Asnicar )
So if you live in another State, you are able to legitimately use our online construction induction training to get your White Card. For more detailed information on each State or Territory's requirements, click here.
