Although the heat has gotten pretty extreme on certain days this summer, authorities warn that the hottest days are yet to come. SafeSA is urging all employers to ensure workers are protected from the heat to avoid a similar situation to the one that left a young apprentice critically injured from heat stress last month.
The young man was working on a building site when temperatures soared above 41 degrees. The apprentice who was on his 3rd day on the job collapsed and was rushed hospital.
It’s crucial that construction workers keep well hydrated and utilise the appropriate sun protective PPE. Employers should also reschedule work for the coolest times of the day and rotate duties so the same workers aren’t always doing the most strenuous tasks or working in the sun.
