Perth Roofing Company Fined After Worker Fell Through Skylight

A Perth based roofing company has been issued a $70,000 fine after a labourer was seriously injured when he plummeted through a skylight in a September 2015 incident.

According to reports, the 2 roof plumbers were removing rusted metal roof sheets from the existing portal frame roof while another roof plumber and labourer were cleaning up metal offcuts and insulation around the roof when the labourer lost his balance. He was standing on a loose insulation roll next to the edge of a skylight. He fell through the 800mmx800mm acrylic moulded skylight.

He suffered multiple fractures and other serious injuries after he fell about 5 metres from the existing portal frame roof to the concrete floor below.

The firm pleaded guilty to failing to provide and maintain a safe work environment and was fined $70,000. The company was also ordered to pay costs of $1369.

WorkSafe urged employers to be aware of the laws involved when there is a fall risk and ensure the necessary safe work procedures are in place.
