China’s military is leading a huge land reclamation project in the middle of the South China Sea and have created 11,7km² of new land.

The project has thus tripled the size of the entire group of natural islands called the Spratly Group, a much contested territory with countries like Malaysia and The Philippines also laying claim to the land.

China has increased its efforts to turn 7 of the islands into usable land. In June, despite international pressure for China to put a hold on the project, construction work grew with the foreign ministry saying it would be complete in just a month.

Since the project began it is estimated that it has claimed 900 acres of new land in a month, equating to 2900 acres, that’s even larger than Central Park.
