One Worker Killed Every Month in WA

WA’s worker injury rate is alarmingly high with a worker killed on the job every month on average this financial year.

According to WorkSafe statistics, since July there have been nine workplace fatalities and four of those deaths were in the construction industry.

Every single workplace death is tragic, as WorkSafe WA Commissioner Lex McCulloch pointed out. Even more tragic is the fact that most of these deaths are preventable but thankfully trends indicate that they are becoming less prevalent.

Among the fatalities were that of Marianka Heumann, 27, and Wesley Ballantine, 17, who both died on city construction sites.

McCulloch reminded everyone that while the responsibility for safety in workplaces rested with employers, it was important workers were aware of their responsibilities.
